Uncovering Your 'Why': The Key to Fulfillment in Your Creative Journey

Today, I'd like to delve into a personal question with you: why do you do what you do?

Do you merely capture people's images? I believe there's more to it...

I suspect your 'why' runs much deeper, and together, I hope we can uncover it.

At times, photography can seem somewhat superficial - a sentiment I've grappled with myself. I've oscillated between viewing it as significant and trivial, particularly in a world where there are so many larger issues at play. I've had to reconcile with the notion that being a photographer, someone who earns a living by taking pictures, can indeed seem superficial.

However, I've come to realize that photography is more than just capturing images. It's about capturing moments, emotions, and stories. It's about creating a visual narrative that can evoke feelings, inspire thoughts, and even change perspectives. It's about using your unique vision to create art that speaks to people on a deeper level.

The label of a "professional photographer" can also carry a certain ego... I recall a sense of indifference washing over me whenever I told someone I was a photographer. It felt inconsequential as if it shouldn't matter to anyone. That was until I asked myself the deeper question of WHY.

Probing the 'why' can reveal a lot about oneself. It can help you understand your motivations, your passions, and your purpose. It can help you connect with your work on a deeper level and find meaning in what you do.

I recall a particular night when I was grappling with another existential crisis, a common occurrence by the time I was 26. I had a grand dream of becoming a renowned fashion photographer, and although I was gradually making strides with my studies, mentorships, and a series of gigs, I felt unfulfilled. I was in deep conflict with myself internally. I hadn't discovered my 'why'.

But that night, I decided to confront my existential crisis head-on. I asked myself why I wanted to be a photographer. Was it just to capture beautiful images? Or was there a deeper purpose?

As I delved into my 'why', I realized that my passion for photography was rooted in my love for storytelling. I loved using my camera to tell stories, to capture emotions, and to create art that resonated with people. I loved the idea of using my work to inspire, to evoke feelings, and to make people see the world through my lens.

But beyond that, I realized that deep down, I was an artist yearning to express myself. My interests were vast and varied, spanning from music to philosophy, spiritual studies, and poetry. Photography was my medium to express these interests, to share my perspective, and to connect with others on a deeper level.

So, if you're feeling unfulfilled or conflicted about your work, I encourage you to ask yourself the deeper question of why. Why do you do what you do? What drives you? What is your purpose? The answers may surprise you, and they may just reignite your passion for your work.
