Turning Resentment into Revenue: My Unexpected Journey to Higher Earnings

Do you recall the exhilarating thrill when you first launched your business? The novelty, the excitement, the sheer joy of doing what you loved, often for little to no compensation? You were saying 'yes' to every opportunity, thrilled that people were seeking your services, even when your prices were low or non-existent. Those were the golden days, until they weren't.

About three years into my photography venture, I realized the imbalance between the time I was investing and the returns I was receiving. My passion for my craft was undeniable, and my clients loved my work. I went the extra mile to ensure an exceptional client experience.

However, a persistent feeling began to gnaw at me. Despite my prompt responses, generous discounts, complimentary prints, and referrals, the clients I was attracting always seemed to want more. I was feeling drained, pouring all my energy into clients who demanded more and more. The creeping resentment was becoming hard to ignore. Then, a revelation struck me. I could, and should, be charging more for my work.

The challenge was the vast chasm between where I was and where I wanted to be. As Einstein wisely said, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." I had to evolve.

  • I transitioned from responding to every email immediately to setting office hours and checking messages only at scheduled times.

  • I learned to articulate the value I offer clients, rather than expecting them to understand it intuitively.

  • I increased my prices to reflect my value and learned to communicate this confidently to clients.

  • I made a commitment to myself to refrain from offering free services unless I genuinely felt compelled to do so.

  • I stopped providing discounts based on perceived affordability or connections.

This transformation didn't happen overnight. It required years of introspection, redefining my relationship with money, setting healthy boundaries, and overcoming feelings of inadequacy.

The internal work paid off when I received my first $2000 payment. The sense of achievement was overwhelming. I had done it, and it felt incredible. I continued this journey of self-improvement and financial growth, and I still do to this day.

The resentment I once felt led me to a place where I could charge more for my work and feel happier, knowing I was being compensated for the value I brought to my client's lives.

Takeaway: The journey from passion to profit is not a straight path, but a winding road filled with self-discovery and growth. The key is to recognize your worth, articulate your value, and set boundaries that respect your time and expertise.

Actionable Steps:

  1. Evaluate Your Pricing: Take a hard look at your current pricing structure. Are you charging enough for the value you provide? If not, it's time to increase your prices.

  2. Set Boundaries: Establish office hours and stick to them. This includes setting specific times to check and respond to messages. Remember, your time is valuable.

  3. Articulate Your Value: Practice explaining the value you offer to your clients. This will help you communicate your worth effectively and confidently.

  4. Say No to Free Work: Unless you genuinely feel called to offer your services for free, refrain from doing so. Your skills and expertise deserve compensation.

  5. Stop Discounting: Resist the urge to offer discounts based on perceived affordability or connections. Stand firm on your prices.

  6. Do the Inner Work: Address any feelings of inadequacy or issues with money. This might involve introspection, therapy, or coaching. Remember, this is a process and it's okay to take your time.

By following these steps, you can transition from feeling undervalued and overworked to being fairly compensated and respected for your work. Remember, your artistry and dedication bring immense value to your client's lives, and it's essential that your prices reflect that.
