FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY- IT’s not as Scary as you think

In the image above, I used a flash to fill in the shadows a bit, even though it was a bright sunny day, it was very subtle but made big difference!

Using flash in your photography doesn’t need to be complicated or scary. I’m here to share my top tips with you so you can start using flash to enhance your photos!

Many photographers tend to shy away from using flash for their photography, and it's not hard to see why. The use of flash can be intimidating, especially for those who are just starting out with photography. But the truth is, using flash for photography is not as scary as you might think. In fact, it can actually be quite simple and rewarding.

In this article, we'll go over some of the reasons why using flash for photography is not as scary as you might think, and how you can get started using flash in your own photography.

Flash is a Versatile Tool

One of the great things about using flash for photography is that it's a versatile tool. It can be used in a variety of situations, and it gives you more control over your lighting. With flash, you can fill in shadows, brighten up a scene, and even create dramatic lighting effects.

Whether you're shooting portraits, landscapes, or still life, flash can help you achieve the look you want. And with modern cameras and flashes, it's easier than ever to get started.

Flash Doesn't Have to Be Expensive

Another reason why using flash for photography is not scary is that it doesn't have to be expensive. While there are certainly high-end flashes out there that can cost hundreds of dollars, there are also more affordable options that can get the job done.

You don't need the most expensive flash on the market to get good results. In fact, some of the most popular flashes among photographers are relatively affordable.

Start by looking for a flash that's compatible with your camera and has the features you need. From there, you can gradually build up your collection of flashes and other lighting equipment as you become more experienced. I have some recommendations that you can check out HERE!

Flash Can Improve Your Photography

Finally, using flash for photography is not scary because it can actually improve your photography. By adding light to your scenes, you can create more interesting and dynamic photos. You can also control the way your subject is lit, which can help you achieve a particular look or mood.

So while it's true that flash may not be necessary for every situation, it's still a useful tool to have in your photography arsenal. And the good news is that using flash doesn't have to be complicated or scary. Here are some top tips to get you started:

Start with a basic flash: You don't need to invest in an expensive flash right away. A basic flash that's compatible with your camera and has manual controls will be sufficient for most beginners. Again, you can always upgrade later as you become more experienced.

  1. Understand flash exposure: When using flash, you're essentially working with two exposures - the ambient exposure (which determines the exposure of the background) and the flash exposure (which determines the exposure of the subject). It's important to understand how these two exposures work together so you can create a balanced exposure.

  2. Use flash in manual mode: While automatic flash modes can be useful in some situations, manual mode gives you more control over your flash exposure. By adjusting the flash power and distance from your subject, you can create different lighting effects.

  3. Use flash modifiers: Using flash modifiers such as diffusers and reflectors can help you achieve more natural-looking lighting. They can also help soften harsh shadows and create a more pleasing light on your subject.

  4. Practice, practice, practice: Like anything in photography, using flash takes practice. Experiment with different settings, try different lighting setups and don't be afraid to make mistakes. With time and practice, you'll become more comfortable using flash and be able to achieve the results you want in your photos.

Using flash does not have to be complicated! With a basic understanding of flash exposure, some basic equipment, and a willingness to practice, you can start using flash to enhance your photos and take your photography to the next level.
